Dorothy Stratten - A Favorite Playmate to Collect
Dorothy Stratten was born under the name of Dorothy Hoogstraten in 1960. When she was 16 years old she forged her mother's signature on a model's release form and sent her photographs into Playboy.
When Stratten was 19 years old, Playboy invited her to be a Playmate where she was featured in the August 1979 issue of Playboy Magazine. The fast and tragic turn that Dorothy's life took shortly thereafter made this issue of Playboy a hotly collected issue.
Shortly before she became Miss August, Stratten had married her long time and much older boyfriend Paul Snider. He soon became jealous of her success and caused many scenes including several at the Playboy Mansion and prompting Hugh Hefner himself to label Snider as a pimp and a hustler. Dorothy found living with her jealous, controlling husband unbearable and by August 1980, she had left him and started a relationship with the director, Peter Bogdanovich.
In mid-August 1980, Stratten agreed to meet her estranged husband at the home they once shared to discuss terms of an amicable divorce. After several hours of no one hearing from them, a friend checked on them and found them both dead in the bedroom. Snider had shot Stratten point blank in the face with a shotgun and then turned the same gun on himself.
Dorothy Stratten was named Playmate of the Year 1980 and this too is another hotly collected issue. Knowing the stories behind the issues will make them even more valuable, if you ever wondered why the August 1979 Playboy is so difficult to find, now you know.
