Playboy: The Early Years
Playboy magazine was published first in 1953 (December). The first issue had no date, since Hef wasn't sure if there would even be a second issue. The centerfold for that first issue was Marilyn Monroe, a classic beauty. That issue sold out in weeks, and is still going strong, and still featuring superstars and some of the world's best known women like Pam Anderson, Drew Barrymore, and Madonna, just to name a few.
The second issue of Playboy began the tradition of calling the model featured in the centerfold a Playmate of the Month (Ms. Monroe was "Sweetheart of the Month"). This pictorial includes nude photos, a poster, and a short bio on the model. At the end of each year, a Playmate of the Year is chosen. Why not add these early issues [http://store.justmensmags.com/plmabais195.html] from the fifties to your collection? It is now customary that a woman appear only one time as a Playmate, but in these early years, you will see that some were featured multiple times. For example, Janet Pilgrim appeared in July of '55, December of '55, and again in October of '56. She is tied with Marilyn Waltz (aka Margaret Scott) for the most appearances. In fact the only models to appear more than once as a Playmate were featured during the 1950's.
These early issues feature many interesting articles of course, and photos that made history time and time again. No Playboy collection would be complete without these issues from the very early years.
